Description Hard Shield Fern (Polystichum aculeatum) is a robust evergreen fern belonging to the shield ferns group. Native to the British Isles, this handsome native fern is valued for its glossy, architectural foliage and strong woodland presence. It occurs naturally in shady woodlands, wooded valleys, hedge banks, and on rocky outcrops, often associated with deciduous trees. The species favours base-rich rocks, including limestone rocks and alkaline soils. How to Identify Hard shield fern forms a neat, upright clump with a distinctive shuttlecock shape. The evergreen fronds are dark green, stiff, and leathery, with a noticeably glossy appearance. Each frond is pinnate, with sharply pointed leaflets, giving the plant a crisp, structured look. Older plants often retain a previous year’s ruff of overwintered leathery fronds at the base. It is often confused with soft shield fern (Polystichum setiferum), which has looser, softer, more feathery foliage and lacks the same firm texture and sheen. How to Grow Hard shield fern thrives in full shade or partial shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens, north-facing borders, and shaded banks. It prefers damp soil that is free-draining and rich in organic matter, particularly leaf mould or well-rotted woodland compost. Although naturally found on limestone and other moist rock surfaces, it adapts well to most garden soils if moisture is consistent. Once established, it is tolerant of dry shade and requires minimal maintenance. Simply remove tired evergreen fronds at the end of winter to allow fresh growth in the new growing season. An excellent choice for naturalistic planting schemes, it provides year-round structure and pairs beautifully with other evergreen native ferns.
